Crypto analysis often mixes three different questions: what claim a token represents, how its supply changes, and what users do on-chain. Keep them separate. A busy network can have a weak token, a well-backed stablecoin can still face access risk, and a low circulating supply can make a small project look deceptively valuable.

Start with the claim behind a stablecoin

“One token equals one dollar” is an objective, not a law. Trace the complete redemption path: who may redeem directly, minimum sizes, banking hours, fees, jurisdictions and the legal claim on reserves. Exchange price can deviate even when reserves are sound if arbitrageurs cannot move cash or tokens quickly enough.

Read reserve evidence with the right question

An attestation is a snapshot of specified assets and liabilities under a defined procedure; an audit is broader, but neither eliminates future operational or legal risk. Check the reporting date, asset duration, custodians, encumbrances, token supply included and whether the report covers the entity that owes holders. Market cap, FDV and the denominator problem

Circulating market cap = price × circulating supply. FDV = price × maximum or fully diluted supply.

Suppose a token trades at $2, with 100 million circulating and one billion eventually available. Market cap is $200 million; FDV is $2 billion. The gap does not prove overvaluation, but it tells you that future buyers may need to absorb far more supply. Now inspect the schedule: team vesting, investor cliffs, ecosystem emissions, treasury discretion, burns and staking rewards.

The denominator itself may be ambiguous. Bridged tokens, locked contracts, foundation holdings and lost coins can be classified differently by data providers. Record which supply definition you use and do not compare projects built on inconsistent denominators.

Tokenomics checklist

  1. Utility: what demand requires the token rather than merely allowing it?
  2. Value capture: do fees accrue to holders, validators, a treasury—or nobody?
  3. Distribution: how concentrated are liquid and unlockable balances?
  4. Emissions: what annual sellable supply enters under realistic participation?
  5. Governance: who can change issuance, fees, collateral or admin keys?
  6. Exit liquidity: how much can be sold near the quoted price?

On-chain metrics: useful context, dangerous signal

Active addresses can count bots or Sybil wallets. Transaction count can rise because fees are cheap. Total value locked can double-count rehypothecated collateral. Exchange inflows may precede selling, collateral movement or internal wallet maintenance. Every metric needs a mechanism and a baseline.

A disciplined interpretation

Write the causal hypothesis before viewing price: “If organic users pay more fees, protocol revenue and token demand should rise.” Then define what would disprove it. If the story changes after every chart, the metric is explaining the past rather than testing a thesis.

A ten-minute asset screen

  • Identify the network, contract address and authoritative documentation.
  • Write the token’s claim, required use and holder rights in one sentence each.
  • Compare circulating cap with FDV and list the next material unlocks.
  • Check top-holder concentration, excluding documented bridges and system contracts.
  • Measure real book depth and daily turnover on venues you can actually use.
  • List protocol, oracle, bridge, issuer, custody and regulatory failure paths.
